I really enjoyed this book about the Olmec culture. I had never heard about this culture prior to reading this great book. This book along with many of the other Captivating History books makes me wonder how much of history I was never exposed to in school history books and classes.I highly recommend this book. I was surprised by the number of photos of various different artifacts.
The Olmecs were a very interesting, very early people of eastern Mexico. Their sculptures tell us much about their times and their lives. they were tradesmen farmers, and fishermen. Their bigger than life sculptures leave more questions than answers. Fascinating.

After decades of travel investigating Mayan, Aztec and Inca civilizations, I thoroughly enjoyed the Olmec publication. A trip to the Mayan ruins of Palenque in Chiapas, Mexico included a visit to the Parque LaVenta Olmec Museum. The distinctiveness of archeological locations does not prepare one for the 28 colossal Olmec heads displayed at the museum. The existence of massive carvings representing the cradle of Mesoamerican civilization was astonishing.However, without a written text, the Olmec society was unknown to history. With more questions than answers, it was difficult to understand how enormous sculptures were created without iron tools. How did they transport an alter weighing over 30 tons without wheels? Since archeologists in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico identified Olmecs as the mother culture and gene pool of Mesoamerica the publication of this book is a great contribution to forgotten history.
While much is uncertain about the Olmecs, this Captivating History offers a concise introduction to one of the earliest advanced civilizations in what is now part of Southeastheern Mexico. The Olmec people flourished from 1,400 to 900 BC and were extensive traders and skilled artisans. They appear to have been the first to harvest and trade in rubber. Their art featured gigantic sculptures from stone. They also made extensive use of jade and jaguars feature prominently in their art. This entry in the Captivating History series provides a very easy to read introduction to these people and their culture. Where there is uncertainty about the Olmecs the book is careful to point out possible alternative views. The book also includes a helpful bibliography to assist in learning more about the Olmecs.
This is a very good and very understandable book about the Olmec civilization. The author talks about when that civilization existed, its culture, possible religion and how they established a wide-spread trading network. Their art is also discussed.The civilization was divided sharply between the elite and everyone else.Their construction of pyramids is covered along with their calendar and, interestingly enough, tortillias and how they aided the wide-spread trading network.The author also admits that there is not a whole lot known for absolute fact about that civilization. Educated assumptions can be made but they may not always be accurate.There are also some photos included in the book
