A well comcieved and executed exhibition from the Van Gogh Museum, I don't need to explain the greatness of Van Gogh, so this review is going to be about the quality of the books layout, structure and the writing/ subject matter. First up .... The layout is stunning, side by side comparisons with exquisite Japanese wood cut prints by masters like Hokusai and Hiroshege. Clear links and inspiration to Vincent's work help you to see his work in a new way. Since this exhibit was organized by the Van Gogh Museum there are many paintings that may be new to many devotees. Second - the structure is built in 3 main stages.... Van Gogh's arrival in Paris, where first discovered the Japanese art form, then his continued and flourishing examination of said art, and finally his departure from Paris and his receding obsession with the Japanese way of seeing. Third and finally the writing, this is not a pretentious or heavy handed book, it very nicely lay out theTimelines and trajectories , however my favorite aspect of this book is the discussion of "cultural appropriation" a hot button issue In all of today's arts no hyperbole here just an honest dialog explains the issues in plain language so the reader can make up their own minds about the ethical nature of one culture mining another's

Lovely book, great seller.

Today (in year 2018) those works of Van Gogh would be tagged as "cultural appropriation" and on top of his own problems the artist would suffer the full wrath of self-appointed cultural police. The exhibition composition and especially essays of leading art historians put under the cover of this lavishly illustrated book make it only natural for artist to explore new means of expression. Why appropriation of all the achievements of "old European masters" is considered natural, almost birthright, but experimenting and adopting techniques of non-european masters is considered colonialist expropriation? The detailed and comprehensive analysis of Japanese art influence on Van Gogh allows us to understand how his mind worked, how he saw the world, how eventually he made his own contribution to the visual arts, and provided his shoulders for the next generation of artists.

In Van Gogh and Japan Louis van Tilborgh explores Vincent van Gogh's love of Japanese graphic art. Van Gogh started collecting Japanese prints while he was living in Paris, and became convinced of the need to look at things and to work `as the Japanese do'. When he moved to Arles in 1888, this developed into almost a religion. He now regarded the success, the future of modern art as being almost wholly dependent on emulating this exotic example. Passionate as it was, however, Van Gogh's love affair with Japan receded into the background after a year. He continued to venerate Japanese artists, but he now saw his own efforts to work in their spirit as overambitious. `Well then, I shall never mean anything significant as a painter, I fully realize that,' he wrote despondently, Van Gogh and Japan shows just how wrong he was.
