I grabbed this for the office. The one I had was a little outdated. These books are always helpful, especially when my computer is off and I need clarification while marking up a manuscript. Everything in this book can be found on Google in a few seconds, so I can't say everyone needs this book. But, it does have its uses.
What is there not to like about the AP stylebook. Easy to use. 2017 is larger than the previous. Love the spiral hinge and it's all durable for constant use.
The contents of the book are exactly what I expected. The binding is a little difficult and often catches the pages.
As the editor of a bi-monthly newsletter for our community I had been using The Associated Press Stylebook dated 1990. The Communications Committee that oversees the publication of this newsletter agreed that we needed an updated version. We chose the spiral-bound version for the convenience of having the book stay open while working at the keyboard. We needed updated guidelines so that our publication could have a correct and consistent format.
This is the industry standard for journalists and PR professionals. Always keep the latest on-hand. The spiral-bound edition is much easier to use.
Writers need a copy of this book because there's no way to memorize all the rules (e.g. Most state names can abbreviated butnot all; you cannot use post office abbreviation; must use Calif., not CA). I always forget the rules for numbers (when to use thesymbols and when to write them out) and when to use a colon and when to use a dash. If you're a professional writer, you needthis book!
This was quite helpful while taking a journalism course. It takes a few minutes to understand the layout of the book to lookup things, but once you get it, it's easy.I think this book helped raise me a letter grade in my course. Anyone taking a journalism course with a strict professor or planning on entering journalism should get a copy. My textbook had a reference in it, but it was quite small. With the low cost of this book, you can't go wrong.If you're taking the course without an intent to go into journalism, check to see if you can use copies from the department first.
