About the Author
Bruce J. Fried, PhD, is associate professor and director of the residential master s degree program in the Department of Health Policy and Administration in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He teaches in the areas of human resources management, international and comparative health systems, and globalization and health. Dr. Fried is also coeditor of and contributor to World Health Systems: Challenges and Perspectives, Second Edition (Health Administration Press, 2012). Myron D. Fottler, PhD, is professor of health services administration at the University of Central Florida, where he teaches courses in healthcare human resources management, service management and marketing, and a doctoral seminar in health services research. He has written and published 25 books and more than 150 journal articles. The book provides an amazing level of detail and guidance on how to manage existing HR systems. It is a great guide for someone that does not have a full understanding of HR, needing a resource to come back to every now and then for reference. However, the book does not sufficiently address some of the major shortfalls of the industry from a practical point of view. It strives to provide solutions from mostly an academic perspective and in some ways resembles the situation of why Six Sigma failed in health care.For example, it states, "The bottom line is that organizations are moving to higher levels of flexibility, collaboration, decentralization, and team orientation... few healthcare organizations facilitate these advanced options" and therefore implies that this is one of the main reasons why SHRM is important. What it doesn't mention is that these principles may not be applicable to the current state of the industry because it lacks the fundamental foundations that other organizations in other industries have already overcome. The current situation of human resources in health care is more comparable to that of the federal government environment blended with how the Department of Motor Vehicles are run than with other organizations in retail, manufacturing, or services. Simply put, you can throw money at all the new software, hardware, systems, and other gadgets and encourage best-in-class practices, but it won't work unless the fundamental foundation and infrastructure is ready for it.Great book for managing current state as it is now and for gaining incremental benefits. However, not suitable for complete transformations and reorganization initiatives.
I am a nurse educator, and am pursuing a doctoral degree to advance my career as an academic dean for a school of nursing. As an educator, I received no formal training in human resource management. This text, a requirement for my human resource course, has opened my eyes to the leadership role. It entails so much more than I was/am aware of, and this textbook has provided the foundation for my learning in these areas.

This was required, explained the concepts well just a dry topic. A little strange in that portions of the first chapter was underlined in pencil, no where else.
