Ok, I bought this thinking it was going to be a shameless ripoff of SAO. Still, was bored, and thought "what the heck, why not?" While this game is very very obviously HEAVILY inspired by SAO, it still brings its own ideas and unique story to the table. Very enjoyable, and with several (virtual) centuries' worth of story telling for a possible sequel! Kind of horrified at the psychological ramifications of some aspects of this world tho... *shudders* IDK who's worse, Kayaba or whatever kept these people trapped? Read this! =^_^=
A generally well constructed book that could be standalone, but also leaves room for sequels.An aged man who recently lost his wife, plays a VR game at his close friend's suggestion. The game initially greatly accelerates time but, a patch is applied, logout denied, and the game accelerates time even further to over a century every 10 minutes. People panic, while most moderators lose their rights, leaving one mentally disturbed moderator in control of policing actions.The "old man" MC, much younger in the game, makes friends, grinds levels, and takes action.The game mechanics were consistent, though unusual in that only attributes leveled. The story was reasonably well paced though several chapters between year-skips went on overly long.I do hope the author considers several sequels. There's still the climb to the top, reaction and actions once logout returns, and the "old man's" decisions on what the future may hold once he finishes his centuries long playing session.
This book is a shining example of what can be done with this genre. Of the dozens of Litrpg series that are little more than authors gamboling their harem fantasies, this book stands apart, a diamond in the rough, providing a matured example of what the genre should be. I found myself wishing many times that I didn't have to go to sleep or go into work. Alas, adults have responsibilities. This book won't disappoint!
Not really one for writing reviews. Not all that good at it, so I tend to avoid it, though I'm an avid reader. This one, however, had me interested not just for its story or flow, but with the way the author chose to compress the tale and worked it out well. Not your typical LitRPG at all. I'd say it's more along the lines of GameLit. However, the story itself is well told and imaginative. I am intrigued with the world that was designed. Interested enough by this author that I believe I will check out his previous series.
There is not a single thing about this book I did not enjoy. The game system is new and refreshing, the characters were unique and had depth, the world was fleshed out and coherent...The protagonist is just a regular player, one who found a trick that worked against a specific foe. It was powerful but not overpowered, and it took him a great deal of time and effort to get it to a useful level. I enjoy these types of protagonists the most, ones who grow strong due to effort and skill rather than a lucky break.Highly recommended.
The book touches on crimes against humanity which in and of itself is hard to read. While some of the game mechanics and story ideas were quite appealing, things kind of just flow in a predictable fashion. The antagonist had most of the attention and provided most of the motivation for the protagonists, leaving very little for positivity in the book.
Great book, told a nice, captivating story that had me read it all in a day.Although the story wraps up nicely it left space open for a potential sequel,i'd love to see what adventures the protagonists party went through in the centuries of extra time they've had.Maybe even some more depth in exploring the sadness that gripped Vincent when encountering the Marquis.All in all this was a great book that would definitely be one of my top recommendations for anyone who is bored or is into this genre.
Was not expecting much from this book but I got sucked in out of nowhere and next thing I know its midnight. Super interesting take on the whole VR dive experience and the reasoning for being stuck in the game. Definitely recommend this book to anyone who hasn't picked it up yet.
